Melvin Matibag, Director of the National Bureau of Investigation, pays a courtesy call on Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun at the House of Representatives of the Philippines to discuss strengthened cooperation, the proposed NBI district office in Olongapo City, and intensified efforts against misinformation.

Newly appointed National Bureau of Investigation Director Melvin Matibag reaffirmed his commitment to modernizing the country’s premier investigative agency during a courtesy meeting with Deputy Speaker Jay Khonghun.

The meeting underscored the importance of closer collaboration between Congress and law enforcement institutions to ensure that national security and public order initiatives are backed by strong legislative support.

A key topic discussed was the proposed establishment of a new NBI district office in Barangay Kalaklan, Olongapo City. The planned facility is seen not only as an infrastructure project but as part of a broader effort to decentralize investigative services and bring government response mechanisms closer to communities in Central Luzon.

Director Matibag emphasized that upgrading regional facilities is critical to enhancing forensic capabilities, intelligence gathering, and case build-up efficiency. He noted that modern, well-equipped district offices will allow the NBI to respond more swiftly to emerging threats and complex criminal activities.

Beyond infrastructure, the two officials also tackled the growing challenge posed by misinformation. They agreed that the deliberate spread of false information has real-world consequences, including eroding public trust and disrupting social stability. Both expressed support for firm enforcement of laws against individuals who intentionally propagate fabricated or misleading content.

Deputy Speaker Khonghun, for his part, conveyed openness to legislative measures that will strengthen institutional accountability while ensuring that enforcement efforts remain consistent with due process and constitutional safeguards.

The courtesy call concluded with a shared resolve to reinforce cooperation between policymakers and investigators, aimed at sustaining reforms, enhancing public service delivery, and protecting the integrity of democratic institutions.
