Castillejos, Zambales – Residents and local officials in the province of Zambales joined the nation in commemorating the 69th death anniversary of former President Ramon F. Magsaysay, honoring the life and legacy of the leader widely known as the “Champion of the Masses.”
The annual remembrance pays tribute to Magsaysay, a proud son of Zambales who was born in Iba on August 31, 1907. Known for his humble leadership and deep connection with ordinary Filipinos, Magsaysay rose to become the seventh President of the Philippines after winning the 1953 presidential election.
Commemorative activities in the province included wreath-laying ceremonies and tributes remembering the former president’s contributions to good governance, public service, and nation-building. Local leaders highlighted Magsaysay’s enduring influence on Filipino leadership, emphasizing his dedication to transparency, integrity, and the welfare of the people.
Magsaysay’s life was tragically cut short on March 17, 1957, when the presidential plane he was aboard crashed on Mount Manunggal in Cebu. He was 49 years old at the time of his death, a loss that deeply saddened the nation.
Decades after his passing, the legacy of Ramon Magsaysay continues to inspire Filipinos, particularly in his home province of Zambales, where many still look to his example as a model of leadership grounded in service to the people. (Dante M. Salvaña)
