SASMUAN, Pampanga — What was once an overlooked stretch along the Caliano River has been transformed into a thriving public space, offering residents of Sasmuan a safer, greener, and more accessible environment for recreation and community activities.

The newly inaugurated 1,300-square-meter Sasmuan Linear Park demonstrates how environmental rehabilitation can directly improve the quality of life of local communities. Developed on a rehabilitated river easement, the project converted idle riverside land into a vibrant community hub complete with a concrete walkway, pavilion, picnic areas, and open spaces for leisure and exercise.

Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Secretary Juan Miguel Cuna led the inauguration ceremony together with Sasmuan Mayor Catalina Cabrera, local residents, students, and DENR personnel.

According to Secretary Cuna, projects such as the Sasmuan Linear Park prove that environmental protection can deliver tangible benefits to communities by creating safe and attractive public spaces while preserving natural resources.

The event also featured a tree-planting activity and the distribution of environmental education tokens to students, highlighting the role of environmental awareness in sustaining community-driven conservation efforts.

Local officials noted that the park is expected to become a venue for family gatherings, outdoor activities, and environmental education, while encouraging residents to take greater ownership of the river and surrounding public spaces.

Beyond its recreational value, the linear park serves as a model for sustainable urban development, showing how river rehabilitation projects can be integrated with community development initiatives.

The transformation of the Caliano River easement underscores the growing commitment of both national and local governments to create healthier, more resilient communities through environmental restoration and responsible land use.
