Subic, Zambales — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) swiftly conducted a maritime assistance operation after a fishing boat experienced engine failure in the waters off Zambales on May 20, 2026.

BRP Cape San Agustin (MRRV-4408) immediately responded after receiving radio communication from Fishing Banca (FBCA) Willyn, which reported mechanical trouble while at sea.

The Coast Guard vessel proceeded to the area and later visually located the distressed fishing boat approximately four nautical miles away. Upon arrival, the PCG deployed its Rigid Hull Inflatable Boat (RHIB) to assess the situation, provide technical assistance, and conduct medical evaluation for the crew onboard.

PCG personnel attempted to troubleshoot the vessel’s engine before securing a towing line to safely transport FBCA Willyn toward Subic, Zambales. Towing operations continued on May 21, with the fishing vessel expected to reach shore later that day.

The operation demonstrated the PCG’s readiness to respond to maritime emergencies and protect the welfare of Filipino fishermen and seafarers.

According to the PCG, the successful rescue and towing mission was carried out under its Intensive Community Assistance, Awareness, Response, and Enforcement (iCARE) Program, which strengthens maritime safety and emergency response efforts nationwide.

The initiative also supports the directive of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to ensure timely humanitarian assistance and responsive public service for communities dependent on the country’s seas and waterways.
