PALAUIG, Zambales — The 69th Infantry (Cougar) Battalion of the Philippine Army strengthened its partnership with the media through a forum focused on the West Philippine Sea, national sovereignty, and territorial defense held on June 10 at Camp Kainomayan in Barangay Bulawin, Palauig, Zambales.
The event gathered officials from the Philippine Army, Philippine Coast Guard, and representatives from various media organizations to discuss key issues concerning national security and the vital role of the media in disseminating accurate, timely, and responsible information to the public.
Carrying the theme, “Strengthening Media Partnership in Territorial Defense and Community Programs,” the forum highlighted the importance of collaboration between the military and media in raising public awareness on territorial defense, national security, and community-based initiatives through both traditional and digital platforms.
One of the major topics discussed was the upcoming Lakad ng Pagdiriwang 2026, which forms part of the commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the landmark 2016 Arbitral Award that affirmed the Philippines’ rights in the West Philippine Sea under international law.

According to Lt. Col. Mark Anthony B. Ruelos, Commanding Officer of the 69th Infantry Battalion, the observance serves as a symbol of national unity in safeguarding the country’s interests, peace, and sovereignty. He also underscored the important role of citizens, particularly the youth, in promoting awareness and understanding of issues related to the West Philippine Sea.
The forum also tackled recent developments regarding a floating structure discovered near Bajo de Masinloc. Officials said government agencies continue to monitor the structure to determine its exact nature, purpose, and potential implications for the country’s security and national interests.
Participants likewise emphasized the importance of responsible and balanced reporting when covering sensitive issues involving sovereignty and international affairs. They noted that close coordination between the media and government institutions is essential in ensuring that the public receives accurate and verified information while preventing the spread of misinformation and disinformation.
The media forum served as an important platform for strengthening communication and cooperation among the military, media, and the public, while promoting awareness, unity, and patriotism in addressing challenges related to national sovereignty and territorial defense.
