CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Region 3 is intensifying efforts to safeguard Central Luzon’s water resources and climate resilience through the planting and distribution of 1.6 million tree seedlings during the observance of Philippine Arbor Day on June 25.
The region-wide initiative highlights the critical role of forests in protecting watersheds that supply water to farms, industries, and communities across Central Luzon. Simultaneous tree-growing activities will be conducted in partnership with local government units, national agencies, private groups, schools, and community organizations.

DENR Regional Executive Director Ralph Pablo emphasized that restoring forest cover is a vital strategy in reducing the impacts of climate change, including flooding, soil erosion, water scarcity, and extreme weather events.
“Every tree planted today is an investment in the future of Central Luzon. Beyond increasing forest cover, these trees will help secure our watersheds, protect biodiversity, improve air quality, reduce the impacts of flooding and soil erosion, and strengthen our communities against the growing threats posed by climate change,” Pablo said.
Since 2011, DENR Region 3 has planted more than 88.4 million seedlings and reforested over 138,000 hectares of degraded lands under the Enhanced National Greening Program. The Arbor Day campaign aims to build on these gains while encouraging greater public participation in environmental conservation.
The DENR said the initiative will contribute to healthier watersheds, improved biodiversity, enhanced carbon storage, and stronger ecosystem protection throughout Central Luzon.
Philippine Arbor Day is observed annually pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 643, which institutionalizes tree planting as a nationwide activity and promotes environmental awareness and responsibility among Filipinos.
