BALER, Aurora — The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) distributed nearly ₱430,000 worth of fishing gear and paraphernalia to qualified fisherfolk in Baler during the Regional Launch of the Malinis at Masaganang Katubigan (MMK) Campaign on July 7, reinforcing the government’s commitment to sustainable fisheries and improved livelihoods for coastal communities.
The assistance package included fish nets (kitang), gillnets, and tuna handline equipment, which are expected to enhance the productivity of local fisherfolk while promoting safe, legal, and responsible fishing practices.
The distribution was one of the highlights of the MMK regional launch, a flagship campaign that seeks to protect the country’s aquatic resources while ensuring food security and strengthening the fisheries sector.

In a gesture of appreciation, the beneficiaries, led by Fisherfolk Regional Director 2026 Jerry Ramos, presented a Plaque of Appreciation to BFAR Regional Director Wilfredo Cruz in recognition of the agency’s continued support for fishing communities and its programs aimed at improving the welfare of municipal fisherfolk.
The distribution was facilitated by Provincial Fisheries Officer Rex Sabbaluca, in coordination with the local government of Baler, to ensure the orderly and transparent turnover of the fishing equipment to qualified recipients.
BFAR said the assistance forms part of its continuing efforts to empower fisherfolk through livelihood support while encouraging the sustainable use and conservation of the country’s fisheries and aquatic resources.
The MMK Campaign promotes a balanced approach to environmental stewardship and economic development by encouraging communities, local governments, and stakeholders to work together in protecting the nation’s waters while improving the lives of those who depend on them for their livelihood.
Through initiatives such as the distribution of fishing equipment, BFAR aims to help build resilient coastal communities and ensure the long-term sustainability of the country’s fisheries industry.
