CITY OF SAN FERNANDO, Pampanga — Thousands of basketball enthusiasts are expected to witness intense competition and emerging local talent as the Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament 2026 officially opened Wednesday, June 10, at the Bren Z. Guiao Convention Center.
The province-wide tournament, now in its second year, gathers 19 cities and municipalities in a grassroots sports program designed to develop young athletes, promote camaraderie among local government units, and provide opportunities for aspiring basketball players to pursue their dreams.

Leading the opening rites were Governor Lilia “Nanay” Pineda and Vice Governor Dennis “Delta” Pineda, joined by members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, local chief executives, SK officials, coaches, and athletes from participating teams.
Representing their respective communities are teams from Angeles City, City of San Fernando, Mabalacat City, Apalit, Arayat, Bacolor, Floridablanca, Guagua, Lubao, Macabebe, Magalang, Mexico, Minalin, Porac, San Simon, Santa Ana, Santa Rita, Santo Tomas, and Sasmuan.
Organized by the Provincial Government of Pampanga in partnership with the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Pampanga, the tournament aims to encourage youth participation in sports while steering young people toward productive activities and away from illegal drugs and other harmful influences.
Vice Governor Pineda highlighted the importance of investing in young athletes, noting that the competition serves as a valuable venue for identifying future basketball standouts who may earn scholarship opportunities through sports.

According to Pineda, the provincial government intends to help talented players gain exposure and possibly secure slots in collegiate basketball programs, allowing them to continue their education while pursuing their athletic aspirations.
The opening ceremony also became an occasion to recognize the support of businessman Manny V. Pangilinan, who extended ₱1 million in financial assistance to help sustain the tournament and expand opportunities for young athletes across the province.
To ensure that participating teams have adequate resources throughout the competition, Governor Pineda distributed ₱100,000 in assistance to each local government unit represented in the tournament.
Players expressed appreciation for the provincial government’s continued commitment to sports development.
The festivities also featured a parade of athletes and the much-anticipated Best Muse Competition. The Municipality of Santa Rita captured the top prize, followed by the Municipality of Mexico in second place and the City of San Fernando in third place.

As the tournament gets underway, local officials expect the Governor’s Cup 2026 to further strengthen community pride, inspire sports excellence, and uncover the next generation of Kapampangan basketball stars.
